Many years ago, I was working on a three-pump lift station.
The first pump was shot so I sent it out for repairs.
At almost the moment it went out, another pump ingested some garbage. That, too, went down.
No problem, I thought. We’ve still got one pump.
Unfortunately, the float switch on the final pump stopped working.
Unable to tell when the water level was sufficient, it kept pumping until the wet well went dry.
Then that pump was overworked, burned out, and went down.
All through the weekend, over the next three days, I sat by that pumping station and operated the units manually, using hand cranks.
It was either that or the community would have their sewage back up.
Which, of course, I wouldn’t allow.
These people were my clients.
